EPR Regulations

Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) is a significant change in environmental regulations that will shift the net cost of packaging disposal onto the producer and incentivise the use of more sustainable materials.

Coming into force in 2023 it will replace outgoing UK packaging regulations and require an increase in reporting for businesses that place packaged goods onto the UK market. Producers will be obliged to report in detail the weight and type of packaging they supply and fund its recycling once it becomes waste.

LARGE PRODUCERS

Businesses with a turnover of more than £2m that also supply or import more than 50 tonnes of packaging per year are classed as “large producers”. They are required to register by 1st October 2023 and report the weight of packaging they place on the UK market. Large producers must fund the recycling of packaging waste via their compliance scheme.

SMALL PRODUCERS

Businesses with a turnover of more than £1m that also supply or import more than 25 tonnes of packaging per year are classed as “small producers”. Small producers have registration and reporting obligations only.
